Newburyport – Jerry Burl died November 24, surrounded by his family, after having lived with glioblastoma for almost three years. He was born in Worcester and raised in Southbridge, MA. He went on to receive his B.A. in Psychology and Anthropology/Sociology from Johnson State College. Between studies he spent his time skiing at Stowe Mountain and fly fishing the Vermont trout streams.
Jerry was a man of passion and integrity who, in addition to skiing and fishing, loved to run, bike, golf and play guitar—in particular the songs of Neil Young. As his children grew up, Jerry passed these hobbies on to them, teaching them to love running, skiing and fishing, and cheering them on as they played their own sports of football and track and field.
In his younger days, Jerry worked on a charter boat on Nantucket and as a ski instructor at Stowe Mountain. He later worked for many years in the Boston area in recruitment, including at BayBank/Bank of Boston and the Charles Sterling Group. He recently retired from a Senior Consultant position at Beacon Hill Staffing Group.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Dupre-Burl and his children (Taylor and Justin and Justin’s wife Emily). He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Nancy Zelazo; his niece Kirsten Zelazo; and his parents Dorothea and Francis Burl. He will be greatly missed by all of the Dupre and Zelazo family members, as well as by his many friends.
A service to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held in spring or summer 2022. The Twomey, LeBlanc, & Conte Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, MA 01950 is assisting Mr. Burl’s family with his arrangements.
In honor of his life, those who wish may contribute to causes Jerry cared about: U.S. veterans, trout streams, glioblastoma research, or anything else Jerry may have inspired. Keep playing the music. Long may you run.
