Gazza and Seaman chased reporter who filmed fishing trip

Tranquillity, relaxation, and peace are words commonly associated with fishing – unless Arsenal legend David Seaman and England hero Paul Gascoigne are involved.

The Three Lions’ teammates caught their fair share of fish, but the deadliest catch of the day belonged to a journalist who caught the pair and former shot-stopper Ian Walker on camera. During the sneaky reporter’s escape, gates were smashed, tyres were let down, a phone was taken, and in almost Scooby Doo fashion, Piers Morgan was unveiled as the mastermind behind the situation.

The controversial former Britain’s Got Talent judge would have maybe got away with it were it not for the meddling Seaman, Gascoigne and Walker who very quickly unravelled what had happened. And Seaman, who also said that he has joked about the fishing trip with Morgan before, offered a jaw-dropping insight into the bizarre situation.

“We were out on this boat fishing and there was this guy who had got all the trout and all the gear, fly fishing with a really good cast,” Seaman said to the Tubes and Ange Gold Life podcast. “I said, ‘he looks like he knows what he’s doing’.

“Then we carried on and I caught a few fish, then the next thing we were like ‘where is that bloke gone?’ As we were all looking he popped up from behind the reeds with a massive lens on his camera taking these pictures. Gazza was like ‘let’s roll in, I want to get the film out of the camera!’

“He starts rolling in and the guy realises so he starts packing all of his gear up ad legging it to the car park. I phoned the fishery owner and said ‘lock the gate there is a reporter here and I want to get the film out of the camera’. Gazza legs it to the guy’s car and is having an argument shouting ‘I want that film, I want that film’ and the guy was like ‘no chance, no chance’.

Gascoigne’s love for fishing is well documented

With the same speed of thought and accuracy he always demonstrated for England and Tottenham, Gascoigne very quickly spotted an opportunity to extract the film from the camera. Unfortunately, any leverage from his current plan did not result in the end product the former midfielder wanted.

“Gazza nicked his phone off the dash board and said you can have that back when I get the film’,” Seaman added. “The guy went ‘no way, no way’ panicked, and wound his window up so he couldn’t speak to us – Gazza started letting his tyres down. Then the guy put his foot down and went straight through the gate, smashed through the fence, onto the road, and skidded down the road never to be seen again.

“Gazza had his phone so I said, ‘press re-dial on that’ and it went straight through to Piers Morgan and Gazza had a massive row shouting ‘you print that photo out, I’ll never speak to you again!’ This was just before the Spain game and the next day, the front of the Daily Mirror was ‘Gazza’s Armada, able Seaman, and Walker the plank!’ It was a brilliant headline!”
