Frederick Semler “Sem” Dieterich Jr., 82, of Hope Valley, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully in hospice care surrounded by his family on Thursday, Sept. 16. Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey on Oct. 15, 1938, he was the only son of Frederick Semler Dieterich Sr. and his wife Dorothy (Ryan) Dieterich.
He was a graduate of The Peddie School and Denison University. In 1998, he finally married his soul mate and true love, the late Kayte (Spitler) Dieterich.
Sem spent the majority of his career in broadcast sales at multiple television stations and networks in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Burlington and New Haven. Throughout his career, Sem had a major impact on the careers of dozens of colleagues he developed and mentored. Sem cherished the outdoors and threw himself passionately into fly fishing, bird hunting, sailing, downhill skiing, and gardening. Along with his wife, he also had a talent for cooking and entertaining that lured friends and family to their homes in Grand Isle, Vermont, Clinton, Connecticut and the Adirondacks. But ultimately, it was his love of hunting dogs, Labrador retrievers and later Hungarian vizslas, that was all encompassing as he bred, raised, field trained, and actively engaged in field trial competitions with multiple loving and talented canines.
He leaves behind his son Frederick “Rick” Semler Dieterich III and his daughter Kimberly Lynn Sablich and their spouses Kimberly Diet erich and Timothy Sablich; his cousin Morgan Lamarche, who was a brother to him, his grandchildren Frederick Semler Dieterich IV, Wren Evelyn Sablich, and Garrett Timothy Sablich.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name to the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation or the Prostate Cancer Foundation. A celebration of Sem’s life and magnetic personality will be held at a later date by the family. For online condolences, please visit buckler-johnston.com.
