Fred James Fleury 1943 – 2022
Marquette, MI—Fred James Fleury, 78, resident of Marquette, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2022, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Fred was born on August 31, 1943. He grew up in Big Bay, Michigan. Fred graduated from Graveraet High School in 1961, St Norbert’s College in 1965, and St Louis University Medical School 1969. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Springfield, Illinois, from 1974 to 1995. He traveled worldwide and spoke about his medical research. Together with his former spouse and business partner, Barbara Harris, he designed, built, and operated Orchard Park Apartments, also in Springfield, Illinois. He was honored with an award for his work in passive-solar, super-insulated apartments from the US Department of Energy.
Fred’s hobbies included fishing, photography, and NMU hockey. He was passionate about travel, especially cruising, and fly fishing trips. His favorite places in the world were the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (the UP) and Alaska.
Fred is survived by three daughters, Michelle (Sean Finn) Fleury, Suzanne (Sean) Hindman, and Renee (Brad) Johnsen, and four grandchildren: Travis and Louis Hindman and Margot and Elise Johnsen. Fred is also survived by his brother, Emerson (Linda) Fleury, sister, Sr. Barbara Fleury, six nieces and nephews, and his former spouse, Barbara Harris. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emerson and Marion Fleury, and a sister, Margaret Lukas.
A celebration of Fred’s life will be held in August of 2022 in Marquette, Michigan. Details to follow.
