Fly fishing brothers crush the run on the Salmon River

The Schrantz brothers—Dennis, Tim, Joe, and Mike—live in four different states, but each year they all get together for one week in October to fish the Salmon River.

“We’ve been doing it for about 10 years with our pals,” said Dennis Shchrantz, of Kalamazoo, Mich. “We love it!”

This year the Schrantz brothers fished the Lower Fly Zone, just upstream from the Altmar bridge and their favorite watering hole, the Altmar Hotel. And they absolutely crushed it.

“We had 6 men on the river every day and hooked over 20 fish per man,” Dennis said, estimating their hook-to-landing ratio to be about one in 9. On their best day, the crew hooked more than 100 fish and landed at least 30 kings, cohos, and one memorable steelhead.

In the above photo, one of Schrantz’s pals, Alan “Cowboy” Swanson, of Sarver, Penn., holds a 32-inch, 18-pound king he caught using an egg pattern fly on a 10-pound leader and an eight pound tippet.

“Cowboy caught this lunker after breaking his 10-weight pole earlier,” said Dennis, “so he’s all smiles on this one!”

In the bottom photo, Dennis holds a 28-inch, 13-pound king using a fly selected and tied by brother Tim, the team’s master angler.

Great work, Schrantz brothers, see you on the river next year!

Nelson Rudiak, of Rome, recently hooked a dozen fish drifting the Salmon River, including this nice king.

The salmon are just about done running on the Salmon River, but there’s still plenty of action in Lake Ontario. Here’s Ben White, of Cicero, with a 36-inch, 11-pound northern pike he caught in Guffin Bay, in 20 FOW, using a flicker minnow with guidance from Bill Saiff Outdoors.

Send us your fish pics!

We want to see your catch: salmon, trout, walleye, two-headed gobies—whatever. Just make sure to provide the name of anyone shown in the photo, their hometown, along with kind of fish, where they caught it, its size and weight (if possible), and the type of bait used. Tight lines, ya’ll.
