Fall Brawl, Walleye Slam winner

The 2022 Blaster Walleye Fall Brawl and the 2022 Walleye Slam are in the books, and pending successful passage of polygraph tests, the winners in each tournament have been posted.

James Holton, who caught a 13.6-pound walleye five days before the tournaments ended, won both events to win a $175,000 Warrior V238 boat in the Slam and a Ranger 622 FS Pro, valued at $125,000, in the Brawl. In fact, the top five places in both tournaments were identical. Holton, 71, is from Milford, Mich.

Second place went to Tammy Stanton with a 13.44-pound walleye, for which she won $50,000 in the Slam and a $100,000 Ranger 621 FS Pro boat in the Brawl, as well as winning cash in the women’s division. Third place in both events was Shannon James with a 12.74-pound walleye caught No. 25. James is set to pocket a combined $90,000 in cash prizes. James Trent placed fourth ($70,000 total) with a 12.22 walleye and Ray Withers ($55,000) was fifth with a 12.11-pound fish.

Opening day deer gun season

Ohio hunters had a successful opening day of the deer gun season, checking 17,193 whitetails on Monday, Nov. 28. 

In 2021, hunters took 21,754 deer on the opening day, which traditionally falls on the Monday after Thanksgiving. From 2019-21, hunters harvested an average of 16,057 deer during the gun season opener. The top 10 counties for deer harvest on the opening day were Coshocton (591), Tuscarawas (584), Muskingum (584), Ashtabula (548), Knox (474), Carroll (464), Guernsey (434), Licking (430), Columbiana (397) and Washington (373). In 2021, Coshocton County also led the state with 850 deer taken on opening day.

Locally, only Ashland County beat its three-year average as hunters checked in 368 deer, up slightly from the three-year average of 357. In Holmes County, the harvest was 369, way off the three-year average of 451, while in Wayne County, the three-year average was 180 and the harvest total came in one deer less at 179.

Trout Unlimited meeting is Monday

The Clear Fork River Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, at First Presbyterian Church, 621 College Ave., Wooster. There also is a Zoom option. Discussion of chapter activities and a raffle of fly fishing equipment will be held. Tim Cammisa, central Pennsylvania fly fishing and fly tying professional, will present a program via video-link titled “Successful Strategies to Catch More Trout.” Cammisa will focus on areas within fly fishing to improve fishing success. Paying attention to the small details will pay dividends in the long run, and those are discussed, including some of the strategies he employs to catch more trout. With topics such as insect identification, reading the water and employing varying techniques, much new information will be shared.

New Year’s Eve morning trap shoot

The East Holmes Sportsman’s Association, 6781 Township Road 310, Millersburg, will hold a trap shoot Saturday, Dec. 31, starting at 8:30 a.m. The club will shoot protectors on two traps and singles on another.
