Craig Alan MacDonald, formerly of Hanover, passed away Monday, February 22nd, at South Shore Hospital, after a brave battle with Alzheimers Disease. Craig was 75 years old. Craig was born on June 20, 1945, in Weymouth, to parents Richard and Kathleen (Connors) Hergesell. He graduated in 1963 from Weymouth High School, where he was an outstanding football and baseball player, which led him to Northeastern University on a football scholarship. Craig excelled at Northeastern being named captain of the 1968 team and later on he was inducted into Northeastern Universitys Football Hall of Fame. Shortly after graduating in 1969, he went on to marry the absolute love of his life Maureen (Keating) MacDonald of Weymouth. He entered the teaching and coaching profession before moving on to the private sector. Nobody had more hobbies than Craig! His hobbies over the years included wood carving, duck hunting, fly fishing, scuba diving, running, golf (Pembroke CC club champion), and domestic handyman. He had a passion for Jimmy Buffet music and was a regular at his concerts. Craig was a diehard Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots fan. He made sure to fill his free time with the company of family, lifelong friends and fun. Craig is survived by his wife Maureen, daughter Amy Stone and her husband Timothy of Hanson and son Craig MacDonald and his wife Courtney of Bristow, VA. He was the grandfather to his “girly girls” Megan, Anna and Keryn Stone, and Frannie and Davis MacDonald. Craig is also survived by his brother Richard of Weymouth, Kathleen Cunningham of Battleground, WA and was predeceased by his sister Mary Melinis of Weymouth. Craig is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St. Rte. 53, Hanover, on Sunday, February 28 from 1-4 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover St. Rte. 139, Hanover, on Monday, March 1st at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Norwell VNA Works and Hospice Charitable Fund, 120 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061.
