In 2019, Cañon City School District approved the first ever River Science Class. This upper-level science class and lab designed by local non-profit River Science will provide students with a foundation of Colorado water literacy, skillsets and an introduction to future water-related careers. Students will develop hands-on skills by working on local restoration projects to collect baseline data, utilize technology, and gain real-world experiences.

To create the curriculum and outdoor learning lab, River Science needed support within the community. Such support came from several local businesses, government agencies and individuals who helped make this dream a reality. One of the essential supporters is Royal Gorge Anglers, who donated $1,000 toward these efforts.

Luke Javernick (Executive Director of River Science)said, “We at River Science are dedicated to creating meaningful STEM opportunities for students while also protecting and rehabilitating the natural environment. We can not meet these objectives without the support of our community and we are grateful to those who have helped us meet our goals such as our partnership with Royal Gorge Anglers.”

“Water may very well be the most important issue of our generation… it’s most definitely our children’s. We’re ecstatic to support an upper-level class for local students that give them an understanding of the importance of proper water use/management and potentially even an introduction to future water-related careers. Our extensive gold medal trout fisheries in the area that fuels our business depends on proper water management. The thriving recreational tourism industry in our area, of course, depends on it. It’s crucial that our kids understand the importance of water management at every level and how it will affect their day to day lives in the future!” – Royal Gorge Anglers

River Science’s foundation is based on utilizing cost-effective technology to understand better and improve complex river issues. Over the past four years, River Science has recognized the importance and benefit of integrating education into their work scopes. Today, most River Science projects and programs integrate technology and education, which are used to investigate and mitigate river system issues. River science is committed to furthering the next generation’s understanding of watersheds and water resource issues while implementing projects that strive to ask difficult questions and deliver science-based results.

Royal Gorge Anglers will celebrate its 31st anniversary as the oldest fly shop and fly fishing outfitter on the Arkansas River. The fly shop at Royal Gorge Anglers offers high-quality fly fishing goods and outdoor clothing from premier brands such as Simms, Patagonia, Orvis, Umpqua, Scott, Hatch and more. Royal Gorge Anglers is one of a handful of Orvis endorsed outfitters in Colorado and offers guided fly fishing tours (half-day, full-day and multi-day) on the Arkansas River, South Platte River, Gunnison River, private ranch venues and high mountain lakes/backcountry streams.
