Shelter

Ruby, a 1½-year-old spayed female domestic short-haired cat, is available for adoption at the Shenandoah County Animal Shelter, 268 Landfill Road, Edinburg.

Her adoption fee is $15. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays. Information: 540-984-8955.

Chicken barbecue

Chicken barbecue halves will be sold starting at 10 a.m. Saturday in front of First Bank in Strasburg to benefit sending 4-H Exchange students to Colorado.

FFA plant sale

The Central High School FFA will hold a plant sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the greenhouse behind the school. Plants will also be sold April 29 and 30. Information: alcurry@shenandoah.k12.va.us.

Child abuse prevention

The Shenandoah County Department of Social Services will host “Empowering Families, Nurturing Futures” to raise awareness of child abuse prevention.

An event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Woodstock Park with informational booths, hot dogs, balloon animals and face painting. A magic show will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Rain date is April 30.

Response fashion show

Response, which provides support to those affected by abuse, will hold a spring fashion show from 2 to 4 p.m. May 15 at Woodstock Brewhouse.

Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are $50 and include hor d’oeuvres and a glass of wine, beer or soda. Sponsorships available.

Shenandoah Reel Women

Shenandoah Reel Women and Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River has announced flyfishing camps planned in June for young women ages 12 to 18.

These camps will introduce the art of fly fishing, basics of knot tying, use of equipment, casting techniques, river entomology and watershed conservation.

The day camp will be held June 13-15 at the Seven Bends State Park in Woodstock. The registration fee is $45.

The overnight camp will be held June 26 through 30 at Shenandoah River State Park in Bentonville. The registration fee is $125. Scholarships are available.
