A while ago, we posted an article by Tom Rosenbauer on his most successful fly pattern, the Rabbit’s Foot Emerger. The immediate response from readers was, “Show us how to tie it!” Luckily, our friends from Tightline Productions were on the case, and Tim Flagler quickly produced this excellent video (which is the only kind of video they make, of course). After Tim made the video, he sent it to us to see what Tom thought. Tom’s response was, “It looks a LOT better than mine! Terrific video, really nice job.” (It’s as if Flagler and Rosenbauer were having a humble-off.)
As usual, there are great tying tips here that go beyond the specific pattern. I especially like the technique of cutting the Antron with just one blade of the scissors to give the trailing shuck a more natural look. You can tie this pattern to match any emerging mayfly, and I can personally attest to its effectiveness in imitating the Pale Morning Duns of Yellowstone National Park.
Rosenbauer’s Rabbit’s Foot Emerger
Hook: Curved emerger hook (here a Dai-Riki #125), size 14-20.
Thread: Brown olive, 8/0 or 70 denier.
Shuck: Chocolate brown Antron dubbing.
Abdomen: Olive rabbit-fur dubbing.
Hackle: Dun CDC.
Wing: Snowshoe-rabbit’s foot hair.
Head: Dark olive rabbit fur.
