PEPPERELL, Mass. – Charles L. “Charlie” Leonard III, of Pepperell, died Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at Community Hospice House, Merrimack, NH. Mr. Leonard was born in Amsterdam, New York, April 19, 1944, the son of Walter S. and Marion (Sitts) Leonard and grew up in Canajoharie NY and Townsend MA. He was a member of the first graduating class from North Middlesex Regional High School in 1962. He furthered his education in math, science and physics at Lowell Technological Institute and Fitchburg State College. Charlie was an automotive mechanic for many years including running his own shop and later he taught automotive repair at Southern NH Vocational Technical College in Nashua, NH from 1975-1990. In 1990 he began his own business known as Tech Train, a school on wheels that taught automotive mechanics diagnostic skills throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. In 1995 Mr. Leonard went to work for Automotive Diagnostics in Peabody until his retirement in 2000. Throughout his life he most enjoyed being outdoors, canoeing, traveling, and was an avid fisherman. He taught fly fishing at the former Bert’s Sport and Tackle in Pepperell and was a founding member of the Squan-a-Tissit chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU). As a member of TU, he was involved with the restocking of fish in the Nissitissit River and conducted acid rain water testing. He leaves his wife of 50 years, Karla V. (Wilkins) Leonard; his son, James W. Leonard and his wife, Heather of Townsend, and his sister Susan L. Laitala of Townsend. He was predeceased by two sisters, Joan L. Brown of Lake City, Iowa who died in 2021 and Jeanne L. Nadel of Tucson, AZ who died in 2013. Calling hours will be 2PM-5PM Sunday, August 28, 2022 at the Anderson Funeral Home, 250 Main Street (Rte 119) Townsend Center. A memorial service will be held at 1PM Monday, August 29, 2022 at Trinity Chapel – Episcopal, 184 Center Road, Shirley. Interment at Hillside Cemetery, Townsend will be held privately.
