Charles Edward Dunbar
April 22, 1935 – January 20, 2022
Monterey, California – Charles Edward Dunbar, Sr. passed away peacefully in Monterey, California on January 20, 2022 at the age of 86. Chuck was born in Sacramento, California April 22, 1935 to Russell and Edith Dunbar. He attended C.K. McClatchy High School, Sacramento City Collage and San Jose State, pledging Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After graduating, Chuck enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country for 2 years. After returning, Chuck worked in the collections business where he developed masterful sales skills, then moved on to work for Shell Oil Company. He met his first wife, Karen Hullin and went to work in the insurance business. This is where he found his passion for sales …. and he was a master at it! Chuck worked in the insurance business for 40 years. Shortly after his first marriage of 18 years, he met his soul mate and biggest cheerleader, Lynda Nielsen. In 2001, Chuck retired and he and Lynda moved to Carmel to enjoy the “golden years”. Chuck was known for his love of the great outdoors, hunting, fly-fishing, golfing, spending time at Lake Tahoe and playing dominoes. He especially loved a Golden Retriever by his side and dancing to any kind of music. Chuck treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren. “Bopa” loved attending their sporting events, grandparents days and all special occasions. Chuck was very proud of his Scottish heritage where he was not shy to sport his Dunbar plaid kilt. He lived life to the fullest and could make a room light up. Chuck was a 10th degree Masonic Jester and a member of Ben Ali Temple, The Sacramento Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Del Paso Country Club, Sutter Club, Grandfathers Club, Quail Lodge and Monterey Peninsula Country Club. He was a wonderful and supportive spouse, father, grandfather and friend. His large personality, antics and smile will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Chuck is survived by his spouse of 41 years, Lynda, his daughter Margaret McKinnon (Robert) and sons, Charles Dunbar Jr., (Clarice) and Chris Dunbar (Paige) and seven grandchildren; Megan and Charles McKinnon, Taylor and Lorance Dunbar and Miles, Lilly and Annabelle Dunbar. He is preceded in death by his father, Russell Sr., mother Ethel, brother Russell Jr. and sister Barbara. A private Celebration of Life will be held with family. We Love You Bopa and Will Miss You Dearly.
