CLEVELAND — While many people think about the physical toll of breast cancer, survivors said the recovery can be just as challenging from a mental perspective.

What You Need To Know

  • It’s hosting an auction to raise money for women to attend the retreat

Casting for Recovery gives women a chance to go on a retreat, learn how to fly fish and feel supported by a community that has their back.

“There’s actually a physical tie to the gentle motion of the fly fishing,” said Andree Kinnee, a cancer survivor, retreat attendee and a Casting for Recovery volunteer. “It’s good for women who’ve had surgery on one side or the other.”

Doctors diagnosed Kinnee with breast cancer eight years ago.

That was when she first learned about Casting for Recovery.

“Just knowing that there was life after breast cancer, the doctors treat your body, but your mind is still like ‘what do I do with all this that’s happened to me?’”

The retreat made such an impact on Kinnee she felt the need to help others fighting cancer get the same experience, that’s why she became a volunteer.

Now she’s helping the organization raise money by auctioning off a range of items from beauty products to cancer awareness gear.

All of the money will go toward making sure 14 women get to experience the annual retreat.  The organization is also hoping to raise enough money to start a second retreat each year.
