JOHNSTON CO., Okla., (KTEN)–Anglers spent the weekend at the Blue River for its annual Trout Fishing Derby.

“Lots of big trout have been caught, and one was 11 pounds 4 ounces, probably the biggest trout that has come out of the blue river,” Said trout derby organizer Scotty Mccarthick.

Fishing started Saturday morning, and participants in each category have a shot at winning prize money.

“We have categories for fly fishing, youth fishing, 65 and older, and 64 and younger,” Mccarthick said. “The two-day total heavy stringer in each category wins 100 dollars.”

Mccarthick said this year’s turnout was one of the best in quite some time.

“We had 215 entries which are the most we’ve had in over ten years, and it’s been a great turnout,” Mccarthick said.

One participant is looking forward to more opportunities to fish at the Blue River.

“It’s been a wonderful year, and It’s my first year,” said trout derby participant William Kinard. “Yesterday was kind of slow, but today has paid off pretty good.”

Mccarthick has been a part of the derby for years; his favorite part is seeing anglers come together for some fun.

“Seeing the people, I owned Scotty’s Blue River One-Stop for several years, and I retired a few years back, and I miss seeing all of those people,” Mccarthick said. “So with the derby, still get to see them at least twice a year.”

The trout derby is organized by the Blue River Association and the Johnston County Chamber of Commerce.

The next trout derby is set for Veterans Day weekend.
