Strange weather for this time of year is making for some iffy fishing.

News from our Jan, The Kingfisher in PMB: “Boston Festival was slow this past weekend, some anglers blanked the entire weekend, unfortunately one of them in our team…

“Strange weather for this time of year is making for some iffy fishing. With the streams closed till opening day on September 1, it’s stillwaters season for the trout anglers at present. Pandemic notwithstanding, the usual winter events are going ahead with strict Covid regulations. After the events were cancelled last year, anglers are champing at the bit to get out on the waters again.

“Last weekend saw the Boston-Dargle Fly Fishing Festival take place and while there were some fantastic fish reported, most anglers found the fishing slow going.”

Jan Korrubel, Kingfisher, Pietermaritzburg

“Last weekend saw the Boston-Dargle Fly Fishing Festival take place and while there were some fantastic fish reported, most anglers found the fishing slow going.

“Some 58 trophy fish (50+cm) fish were recorded, with four of those over the 60cm mark. The winning fish was a rainbow of 63cm. A must-mention is a magnificent brown trout of 60 cm, caught by visiting angler Grace Naude from Maclear. Team Maclear Minkies walked away as the Top Team, with local Team Zimmers coming second. The award for Top Angler went to Durban-based Greg Zeiler, with Midlands local Andrew Beach collecting second place. This is a great event with great people and definitely on the calendar for next year!

“Last weekend also saw the first Leg of the TOPS Corporate Challenge. The winning fish a rainbow of 62cm. ‘Tour de Fly Box’ was the name of the game. As expected in these events, fly selection was all over the place, with no one fly, size or colour being credited for producing the most fish.

“Report from Sabaa (South African Bass Angling Association) was that Zululand were crowned the Inter-provincial champions at Albert Falls Dam on Friday, June 18, after convincingly topping the scoring charts at the 2021 Inter-provincials.

“The competition took place over three days, beginning on Wednesday, with each successive day of fishing proving tougher than the one that preceded it.

“Fish weren’t in short supply, but the biggest challenge over the three days was landing bass that met the minimum 300 mm requirement.

“The winter scaly fishing might be slow, but some quality fish are to be had. Local Matthew Drew reports some great fishing at Zingela Camp on the Tugela last weekend.”

Jan Korrubel, Kingfisher, Pietermaritzburg

“The biggest catches came in on opening day, with a 3,66 kg lunker being reported, as part of a 10,615 kg bag. Zululand, with a steady team performance, were deserved 2021 South African Inter-provincial champions, with KwaZulu-Natal coming in second. Midmar Dam is reportedly also producing some good numbers of fish.

“The winter scaly fishing might be slow, but some quality fish are to be had. Local Matthew Drew reports some great fishing at Zingela Camp on the Tugela last weekend.” Thanks so much for this report Jan.

Much netting on the coast

On the saltwater side the south coast has been the main action centre along the KZN coast. There has been plenty of netting happening on the south coast.

The latest netting has been on the upper south coast, so is a good area to start.
