ATHOL — On Saturday, April 2, a ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Silver Lake Pavilion to honor two area women who founded what is now known as Spelman College, the oldest all-women’s historically Black college or university in the country, Sophia Packard and Harriet Giles were both born in New Salem.
ORANGE — Sally Howe and Kathy Kramer-Howe, Sally’s sister from Arizona, will read poems by Kramer-Howe and the late Dorothy Johnson of New Salem at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Stage on Main, 17 South Main Street.
ATHOL — Friday April 8, 15, 22, 29, and May 6, 13, 20, at 7 a.m., “Early Bird Birding with Jeff Johnstone.” Join Johnstone at the Environmental Center (100 Main St., Athol) before heading out to explore the North Quabbin area for spring migrant birds. WORCESTER — Tickets are now available for a concert by the New England Symphony Orchestra in Worcester’s Mechanics Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. NESO Music Director Roderick MacDonald will be the featured soloist in Haydn’s trumpet concerto in E-flat major. The program will also include perennial favorite Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony number 9, “From the New World.” Tickets are available through the orchestra’s Web site (newenglandsymphony.org) or from the Mechanics Hall box office at 508-752-0888.
ROYALSTON — On Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m,. muralist and painter Sonja Vaccari will assist people in a painting class at the Royalston Town Hall. Class size is limited and you must register by stopping by or calling the Phinehas S. Newton Library at 978-249-3572 or emailing the Library at royalstonlibrary@gmail.com. There is a $10 materials fee.
ATHOL — David Pogue will present “How to Prepare for Climate Change” — a virtual zoom event Wednesday, April 13, 6 p.m. A limited group viewing will be available (depending on pandemic level) at the Athol Public Library; stay tuned for updates.

GARDNER — Local nature photographer and avid historian Dale Monette will once again present a fascinating topic at The Gardner Museum, this time of the Quabbin Reservoir history. Thursday, April 14, from 7 to 8 p.m., after a museum-hosted reception from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Monette will share images of buildings before and after the creation of the reservoir in the 1930s. Since the early 1970s, Dale lived within 2 miles of the Quabbin reservoir; after receiving a BS degree from UMass’ Dept. of Environmental Conservation in Natural Resources Conservation, he spent his career working at Quabbin as an educator and naturalist. ATHOL — The Green Clean Athol Spring Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, April 23. “We’re urging people to do their neighborhood. People are encouraged to show up at Lord Pond Plaza the morning of the event. Heidi Strickland said, “This year we’re going to have a map, and if people need a place to go, we will designate a place and hand them a map.”

MARLBOROUGH — Columnist Mike Roche tells us, “The Fly-Fishing Show, which boomed when that sport had a growth spurt, has just announced a change in dates and will be held at the Marlborough Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade Center April 22-24. Local fly fishermen have always enjoyed this show, produced by a group that holds similar events across the country, as the latest equipment and many exciting destinations are always part of the lure as are the many interesting seminars.”
GARDNER — The Gardner Museum presents Athol author J.R. Greene and his newest book (“Calvin Coolidge in 100 Objects,” published fall 2021) about the man who graduated from Amherst College and went on to lead the nation as the 30th president of the US. It is J.R. Greene’s 23rd book and fourth pertaining to Calvin Coolidge.
