April 9: Lasagna Dinner

PETERSHAM — The Orthodox Congregational Church of Petersham will hold its annual Lasagna Dinner as a to-go meal, with pick-up from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at the Church, 21 N. Main St. Options include veggie, meat, and seasoned meat. Cost is $25 for a half-pan, proceeds to help repair the church bell ringer, broken on Christmas Eve. April 9: Dance

WINCHESTER, N.H. — There will be a St Patrick’s Day Dance at the ELMM Community Center, 21 Durkee St., Winchester, N.H., Saturday, April 9, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Live music by: “Cruzin’ Carl Band.” Refreshments served; 50/50 raffle. Fridays: Early bird birding with Jeff Johnstone

ATHOL — Friday April 8, 15, 22, 29, and May 6, 13, 20, at 7 a.m., “Early Bird Birding with Jeff Johnstone.” Join Johnstone at the Environmental Center (100 Main St., Athol) before heading out to explore the North Quabbin area for spring migrant birds. These are great events for the novice birder to learn from one of our best field naturalists. Come for as long as your schedule allows. Severe weather cancels. Info: Jeff Johnstone, 978-249-9052. April 9: New England Symphony Orchestra concert

WORCESTER — Tickets are now available for a concert by the New England Symphony Orchestra in Worcester’s Mechanics Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. NESO Music Director Roderick MacDonald will be the featured soloist in Haydn’s trumpet concerto in E-flat major. The program will also include perennial favorite Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony number 9, “From the New World.” Tickets are available through the orchestra’s Web site (newenglandsymphony.org) or from the Mechanics Hall box office at 508-752-0888.

April 10: Painting class

ROYALSTON — On Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m,. muralist and painter Sonja Vaccari will assist people in a painting class at the Royalston Town Hall. Class size is limited and you must register by stopping by or calling the Phinehas S. Newton Library at 978-249-3572 or emailing the Library at royalstonlibrary@gmail.com. There is a $10 materials fee.

April 11: ‘Climate Change in Your Backyard’

NEW SALEM — On Monday, April 11, at 7 p.m., the New Salem Public Library will present “Climate Change in Your Backyard” via Zoom with Dr. Toni Lyn Morelli. Dr. Morelli is a Research Ecologist in the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center at USGS/UMassAmherst.

Dr. Morelli will open the talk with a brief overview of climate change and then address some specifics related to local impacts of climate change. To register, contact the New Salem Public library at 978-544-6334 or n_salem@cwmars.org

April 13: Pogue on preparing for climate change

ATHOL — David Pogue will present “How to Prepare for Climate Change” — a virtual zoom event Wednesday, April 13, 6 p.m. A limited group viewing will be available (depending on pandemic level) at the Athol Public Library; stay tuned for updates.

Pogue offers sensible, deeply researched advice for how we can ready ourselves for the years ahead.

April 14: ‘Quabbin houses’ at The Gardner Museum

GARDNER — Local nature photographer and avid historian Dale Monette will once again present a fascinating topic at The Gardner Museum, this time of the Quabbin Reservoir history. Thursday, April 14, from 7 to 8 p.m., after a museum-hosted reception from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Monette will share images of buildings before and after the creation of the reservoir in the 1930s. Since the early 1970s, Dale lived within 2 miles of the Quabbin reservoir; after receiving a BS degree from UMass’ Dept. of Environmental Conservation in Natural Resources Conservation, he spent his career working at Quabbin as an educator and naturalist. April 23: Green Clean Athol

ATHOL — The Green Clean Athol Spring Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, April 23. “We’re urging people to do their neighborhood. People are encouraged to show up at Lord Pond Plaza the morning of the event. Heidi Strickland said, “This year we’re going to have a map, and if people need a place to go, we will designate a place and hand them a map.”

April 22-24: Fly-fishing show

MARLBOROUGH — Columnist Mike Roche tells us, “The Fly-Fishing Show, which boomed when that sport had a growth spurt, has just announced a change in dates and will be held at the Marlborough Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade Center April 22-24. Local fly fishermen have always enjoyed this show, as the latest equipment and many exciting destinations are always part of the lure as are the many interesting seminars.”

May 19: J.R. Greene on Calvin Coolidge

GARDNER — The Gardner Museum presents Athol author J.R. Greene and his newest book (“Calvin Coolidge in 100 Objects,” published fall 2021) about the man who graduated from Amherst College and went on to lead the nation as the 30th president of the US. It is J.R. Greene’s 23rd book and fourth pertaining to Calvin Coolidge.
