Alfred C. “Fred” Fairchild, 77, of Galion passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

He was born August 10, 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland and was the son of Alfred Charles Fairchild, Sr. and Catherine (Meehan) Fairchild. Fred is survived by his wife of 37 years, Nancy (Griffeth) Fairchild whom he married on October 20, 1984.

Fred loved sailing, fly-fishing, spending time with his chocolate labs and Siamese cats, reading, and most of all spending fun times with family and friends. He loved to travel and enjoyed our trip to Spain, trips to Michigan, North Carolina, the Florida Keys, and was planning a trip to Ireland. He was kind, caring, generous, and had a good sense of humor. He was a good man and the best husband and dad that anyone could ever want.

As his three daughters were growing up, Fred attended all their activities and he helped them learn to ride a bike, catch a fish, sail a boat called Moonshadow, and go bowling and ice-skating. As they grew older and graduated from high school and college, he was always so very proud and supportive of all three. All he ever wished for them was to be happy. Sadly, he didn’t get to meet his first granddaughter, but we know that he will be with her and in all of our hearts for the rest of our lives.

A former teacher of Fred’s said that it was obvious that Fairchild was the ideal name for an elementary school principal; he was always fair, kind, and patient with his students. Whether he was a teacher at St. Joe’s, a principal at Wilma Crall, or a guidance counselor at Buckeye Central, he treated his students, families, teachers, and staff with respect and cared deeply about their success.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Alyson and husband Eric Gledhill of Granville and Molly and husband Ryan Miller of Westerville and one expected granddaughter, Maya Jennifer Miller.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Fairchild.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2022 at Richardson Davis Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 16 at St. Paul United Methodist Church 746 Cherry Street Galion, Ohio 44833 with Pastors Sheryl Seitz and Ash Welch officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jennifer Fairchild Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
