The Kansas Wetlands Education Center is gearing up for a “WILD” summer, according to Program Specialist Mandy Kern.

“WILD is an opportunity for school-age kids to get outside and explore nature away from devices,” Kern said. “New families are always welcome to join KWEC’s monthly activities. We have an exciting summer line-up; please call 1-877-243-9268 with your interest in the activities as we have guest experts coming in and we want to make sure we have interested participants!”

On Wednesday, June 2, join KDWPT Region 1 Fisheries Supervisor Lynn Davignon with a program on Fly Tying. Fly fishing, the “quiet sport,” is gaining in popularity across the country, even here on the prairie. And to those who’ve been at it awhile, the desire to catch fish with their own forms of terminal tackle takes the quiet sport a step further with learning to tie their own flies. Davignon will offer two sessions of the program. At 3 p.m. at KWEC, elementary-aged participants will learn the why’s and how’s of beginner fly tying. At 6 p.m. the program will be geared toward middle school through adult participants. Davignon will discuss materials and tools used for more advanced forms of tying.

“Fly tying will be a great kickoff for WILD participants this summer,” Kern said. Upcoming programs include Nature Photography with Michelle Beran on July 16 and the annual Friends of Cheyenne Bottoms Youth Outdoor Day on Aug. 29.  Call the center or email Kern at amkern2@fhsu.edu for more information.
