Here’s the latest installment in an ongoing series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video teaches a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.

This week, Tim shows you how to create a CDC collar by inserting fibers into the split thread, which is then wrapped in front of the fly body. It’s easier than it sounds, thanks to the ingenious use of a chip clip to hold the fibers in place. This split-thread technique was covered in an earlier video, which you can see here. The result of this technique is a sparse, wispy collar that gives the pattern a very buggy profile.
