Dr. A. Charles Rabinowitz of Boerne, TX, passed away peacefully at his home on February 28, 2021, surrounded by his loving wife of 15 years, Kristi, and his devoted family.
He was born December 13, 1949, in Corpus Christi, TX, to George and Johanna Bass Rabinowitz.
Charlie attended McHi in McAllen, Texas, and went on to attend Rice University in Houston, TX where he studied engineering and participated in the development of computer programs used by NASA during that era. Following his undergraduate studies, he attended the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio where he was at the top of his class and graduated with a degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1975. Thereafter, he participated in a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital where he helped develop the M.U.M.P.S. computer programming language which became the predominant database for electronic health records adopted in over 40% of the hospitals in the United States. Following his research fellowship, Charlie continued his medical training in Seattle, Washington, where he was selected as Chief Resident of Internal Medicine at Harborview Hospital and completed his cardiology fellowship in San Antonio, TX. His career began in 1981 as a specialist in cardiology in San Antonio at Nix Hospital. He dedicated himself to providing excellent and attentive care to his patients, which he did dutifully until shortly before his death. He can be credited with saving the lives of thousands of patients during his career. His devotion to his patients developed into lasting personal relationships with many.
He was a founding member of South Texas Cardiovascular Consultants and a founding physician and an owner of the TexSan Heart Hospital. Charlie was a member of many professional associations and received many awards and accolades over his long and illustrious career.
In all things, Charlie put his entire being into the effort. This was especially true in his religious studies and his faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It was his faith that gave him the strength to survive many complex illnesses during his lifetime. As those with whom Charlie was closest have shared, during a bout with one of his very severe illnesses “Charlie saw the ‘light’ and had the strength and determination to come back.” In the last ten years of his life during his courageous battle with lung cancer, his love of God and his faith in Jesus Christ did not waiver.
During his lifetime, Charlie found pleasure in many hobbies; he was an Eagle Scout, an expert outdoorsman, a marksman and an angler. Charlie shared his love of the outdoors, including camping, hunting, fishing, and skiing with his four sons and many close friends. He built a log cabin in Crested Butte, Colorado, to enjoy his cherished outdoor activities with his family. He enjoyed fishing on the Texas coast with his sons and grandchildren as well as fly fishing in the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, and even Tasmania. His lifelong passion for hunting was introduced by his father in South Texas. Many memorable hunting adventures were shared with his sons and friends in faraway places such as South Africa, British Colombia, Colorado and Mexico.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Kristi Smith Rabinowitz; his brother, Michael Rabinowitz of McAllen, TX; and his sons: Armand Rabinowitz and wife Emily of Chicago, IL, Adam Rabinowitz and wife Holly of San Antonio, TX, Joshua Rabinowitz and Luke Rabinowitz of Boerne, TX; four grandchildren: Owen, Joely, Noah, and Nicholas; nephews: David Aaron Rabinowitz and wife Michelle of Beverly, MA, and Evan Jacob Rabinowitz of McAllen, TX; nieces: Sara Ashley St. Mary of Maple Shade, NJ, and Jennifer St. Mary Warden and husband Eric of Voorhees, NJ.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Joan Rabinowitz St. Mary.
