The Margaree River, on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, holds a special place in Tim Flagler’s heart, as his family visited the region regularly during his childhood. He also makes an annual fall pilgrimage to the river to fish for Atlantic salmon. In the near future, he hopes to get there in the summertime, when one of the more productive fly patterns is the Margaree Bug. Many folks fish the Margaree Bug on the surface, using a riffling hitch to keep the fly high in the water.
In this week’s video from Tightline Productions, Tim shows you how to tie this simple streamer, which features a multicolor body and sparse moose-hair wing. As usual, Tim’s tutorial is full of great tips that will help you tie more attractive and durable flies.

Margaree Bug
Hook: 2X-heavy, 3X-long streamer hook (here a Mustad 9671), sizes 4-8.
Thread: Black, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Rear body: Olive chenille, small.
Center body: Wine chenille, small.
Front body: Olive chenille, small.
Underwing: Pearl Krystal Flash.
Adhesive #1: Thread wax.
Overwing: Moose body hair, cleaned and stacked.
Collar: Highlander green hen hackle.
Adhesive #2: Thread wax.
Head: Black tying thread.
Adhesive #3: Head cement (here, Sally Hansen Hard-As-Nails).
Collar: Hair stacker, hackle pliers, whip-finish tool.
