news, local-news,

Whether you’re an avid fisher or just enjoy the tranquility of sitting by the water, Gloucester has a range of rivers to drop a line into. The rivers in the Gloucester region come under the Peel District and are classed as general trout streams. Fishing is a popular past time in the region and you can often find people standing by the river, in a kayak or even knee deep with a fly fishing reel. There is a diverse selection of swimmers to catch in the pristine waters which roll down from Barrington Tops. You may find: For trout, try dropping in a line at Dilgry River, Little Manning River, Polblue Creek, Moppy River, Kholwha Creek, Barrington River above Moppy, Gloucester River above the falls at Gloucester Tops, Cobark River, Moonan Brook and Nowendoc River. Recommended bait are yabbies, worms, crickets, artificial flies, lures and synthetic baits. For Australian bass, Estuary perch, catfish or Mullet, try the Barrington River at Rocky Crossing or downstream, Barrington Reserve and Relfs Landing (end of Relfs Road) or the Gloucester River at Faukland Road crossings and downstream or the Barnard River at the Bretti Reserve both upstream and downstream. Recommended baits for bass or perch are crickets, earthworms, surface lures and spinner baits. Recommended baits for catfish are yabbies, snails and earthworms. Recommended baits for mullet are worms or dough. Each fish has a run of season and there are limits on size and numbers that can be captured. Bass season opens on September 1 and runs until April 30. No taking of Australian bass or Estuary perch from May to August other than catch and unharmed release. Trout season runs from midnight on the Friday of the October long weekend through to midnight on the Monday of the June long weekend. Fishing is prohibited in general trout streams from the June long weekend until the October long weekend. Usually, other fish like catfish, eels and herring start arriving in the rivers and streams toward the end of November. The eels and the catfish are in the rivers during winter but are not usually biting during the cooler months. Fishing licences are required and must be on your person at all times when fishing. Licences can be purchased online at ServiceNSW or at the Gloucester Visitor Information Centre. Children under 18 years, pensioners and indigenous persons are not required to have a fishing licence. For more information about where to fish or capture requirements, visit the Gloucester Visitor Information Centre at 27 Denison Street, Gloucester.
