Among the very first how-to videos from Tightline Productions every posted on the Orvis News was a lesson on tying the Zebra Midge, way back in 2011. Since then, Time Flagler has also shown us how to tie the Copper Zebra Midge and a Perdigon-style Zebra Midge. The fact that there are so many variations is a tribute to the pattern’s effectiveness, which is especially true for winter-fishing.
In this week’s video, Tim walks you through the steps for creating a version of the Zebra Midge that features a wide-gap jig hook, a heavy tungsten bead, and a hot-pink butt that will certainly act as an attractor. As usual, there are plenty of great tying tips that will help you solve common problems, such as how to keep the bead in place, how to keep the butt from sliding down the hook shank, and how to add materials to a tiny hook without adding unwanted bulk.
Brite Butt Zebra Midge
Hook: Wide-gap jig hook (here a Fulling Mill FM5125), size 20.
Bead: Black tungsten slotted bead, 3/32-inch.
Thread: Black, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Weight: Lead-free round wire, .015.
Butt Pink Glo-Brite fluorescent floss.
Rib: Silver Ultra Wire, small.
Body: Black tying thread.
Collar: Black rabbit-fur dubbing.
Adhesive: Head cement (here, Sally Hansen Hard-as-Nails).
Tools: Plunger-style hackle pliers, whip-finisher, thread wax
