Video: How to Reverse Thread Direction

Here’s the latest installment in our series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video will teach a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.

Some fly-tying patterns and techniques call for the tier to reverse the thread direction around the hook. Sounds easy, right? Nope. If you try to throw a half hitch or even a whip finish to anchor the thread, you’ll find that everything spins when you try to wrap in the other direction. In this great video, Tim shows you an easy way to lock the wraps against the hook shank, so everything stays in place as you reverse-wrap and then return to normal.
