Several of my fishing clients have reached out to me recently looking for suggestions on fly rods for their kids and grandkids.
This gave me the idea to write a column about gift ideas for the fly fisher in your life.
As for fly rods one doesn’t need to break the bank. Top of the line fly rods can cost $800 to $1000 but would be overkill for the beginner. It would be equivalent to putting racing skis on a novice skier. There are plenty of options for decent rods under $200 and even some combos that include reel, and line in the same price range.
A 9-foot 5-weight is a good all around rod for trout fishing and can be used to throw dries, nymphs, or streamers.
If you are on a budget there are numerous options for gifts under $50. Fly fishing tools are something everyone needs and one of the most common things I lose. Nippers, hemostats, hook removers, and a lanyard to hang them on are all good ideas. Leaders, tippet, and floatant all make good stocking stuffers.
You can get a dozen flies and a box to keep them in for under $50. Instead of buying 12 different patterns get several of a few patterns.

A dozen Skwala’s are a good start as it’s the first major hatch of spring. The Purple Haze and Brindle Chute are great local patterns and catch trout most of the season.
