Nine-year-old Katie Murphy can be forgiven for being a little shy – this is her first television interview; she’s had a lot of firsts over the last two years.When WXII 12 News Reporter Wanda Starke asked her what she did the first time she met her mom, she said she “was a little bit nervous” and “ran around the house.”Click the video player above for more information about Katie’s adoption.But by the end of the evening, the nervous energy was gone. And the next day, she was bonding with her foster mom. “We were playing on the playground and at one point she said, ‘Mom, will you come help me?’ said Mary Murphy, her mom. “And I waited a minute and it was like, ‘Oh wait—that’s me!'”Mary Murphy, who was only 27 years old at the time, had no plans to adopt, but it wasn’t long before she changed her mind. On May 10, 2019, Katie Murphy officially became Mary Murphy’s daughter.”She looked at me and said, ‘Am I really a Murphy now?'” said Mary Murphy. “It was so cool to see it really sink in for her, ‘Yes you really are a Murphy.'”Katie Murphy has gone through many firsts: Swimming, skiing, soccer, triathlons, biking and fly fishing.But it hasn’t been all fun and games.Mary Murphy said learning and helping her daughter through childhood trauma has been painful. She wants her daughter to know she has everything she needs.”My dream for Katie is that she knows in the deepest part of herself that she is deeply loved and cared for — for exactly who she is and by me, but even more so by God,” Mary Murphy said.
