‘Tis the season for swinging flies to tempt salmon and steelhead throughout the country, whether you live in the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, or the Northeast. Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions recently spent time on the Salmon River in Upstate New York, where he conceived this gaudy Intruder-style fly designed to be swung. At least two king salmon fell for it, which is a pretty good return on investment.
In this great video, Tim shows you how he ties this garish pattern, and although there are quite a few steps, he makes things as easy as possible. Check the tools list before you begin, so you’ve got everything at the ready. I bet that this fly would also look great in purple, blue, and orange.

Shank: 25mm Intruder Shank.
Hook: Partridge Z4 Intruder hook, size 6.
Thread: Black, 6/0 or 140-denier.
Wire: Black Senyo’s Thin Intruder Trailer Hook Wire.
Eyes: Black bead chain, medium.
Adhesive #1: Superglue (here, Fly Tyer’s Z-Ment).
Butt: Hot pink Angora goat dubbing
Rear collar: Black hen neck.
Front collar: Black marabou.
Body: Silver Sparkle Braid.
Front Dubbing Ball: Hot pink Angora goat dubbing
Rear collar: Pink and black Guinea fowl.
Front veil: Hot pink barred ostrich herl.
Flash: Pearl Flashabou.
Front collar: Fluorescent pink cross-cut rabbit strip.
Head: Tying thread.
Adhesive #2: Head cement (here, Sally Hansen Hard-as-Nails).
Tools: Wire cutters, rubber band, dubbing wax, dubbing whirl, plunger-style hackle pliers, hair clip, chip clips, dubbing needle.
