Rather than follow an established recipe, creative fly tiers will often experiment at the vise to see what they can come up with on their own. That’s exactly what Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions did when he first tied the Just Another Euro Jig: He looked at the materials that were already lying on his tying desk and asked, “What can I concoct from these ingredients?” The result is a buggy, neat, Euro-style nymph, which, Tim admits, bears a passing resemblance to any number of patterns already out there. As usual, you’ll learn a few cool tying tips from watching how Tim prepares and attaches materials, and these are skills that will make you a better tier.
Just Another Euro Jig
Hook: Barbless jig hook (here, a Fulling Mill 5045), size 14.
Bead: Tungsten slotted bead, 1/8”, nickel.
Thread: Black 6/0 or 140-denier.
Weight: Lead-free round wire, .020.
Tail: Dark or medium pardo Coq de Leon fibers.
Tag: Red Ultra Wire, small.
Rib: Silver Ultra Wire, small.
Abdomen: Black Superfine dubbing.
Thorax: Peacock black Ice Dub.
Adhesive: Head cement (here, Sally Hansen Hard-As-Nails.)
Tools: Plunger-style hackle pliers, whip-finish tool.
