Artist Galen Mercer lives along the Battenkill in West Arlington, Vermont. Canadian by birth, he’s the grandson of two painters and the son of another, so it’s kind of in his blood. He’s also a fanatical fly fisher. His new series of paintings of the Atlantic coast continues his fascination with the changing light of the seasons. Here’s how he describes the new works:

High summer and a journey to the coast provided the inspiration for some new paintings. Exploring Rhode Island’s idyllic shores, we caught an ideal stretch of July weather, the type that enriches and defines a landscape, while providing the best evenings of the year. I wandered in and out of coves and back bays seeking marvelous things, which proved so abundant it was hard to keep up. To straddle the seasons, there’s also a coastal painting which derives from last year’s trip to Maine – an evening view of resplendent autumn light bathing a Penobscot Bay headland. I began this piece in autumn 2021, but only just completed it. The North Atlantic coastline is a source of undiminished renewal for me and I hope these new pictures might likewise offer you a moment of pleasant respite.
