Downeast Trout Unlimited plans to hold its first meeting of the season at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, via Zoom.
Matt Streeter, project manager for the Maine Rivers China Lake Alewife Restoration Initiative, will speak.
This project successfully restored a run of close to a million alewives to China Lake for the first time since at least 1783, by removing three dams and building three fishways on Outlet Stream. This allowed fish passage to the Sebasticook River and the Atlantic Ocean, according to a news release from Tammy Packie, secretary and founding member of Downeast Trout Unlimited.
Streeter works with Maine Rivers, Trout Unlimited and other conservation groups around Maine. He is working with Maine Rivers to develop future projects and initiatives, and is managing the Edes Falls Dam Removal project for the Sebago Chapter of TU on the Crooked River in Naples.
Other TU projects include the Swett Brook dam removal, which restored the aquatic connectivity of a vital tributary of the Crooked River, key for Sebago Lake’s salmon population. He is the TU Maine State council Chair. An avid fly-fishing angler, Matt is committed to habitat restoration.
