Susan (nee Colket) Rakestraw, 94 years old, died on the morning of July 11, 2022 at Beaumont in Bryn Mawr, PA. Born March 15, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Gertrude “Trudy” (née Crawford) Colket and late Tristram “Tris” Coffin Colket, 2d, she is also predeceased by her husband, Edward Hyde Rakestraw, Sr.; her long-time companion, Steven Smith; three step-children; older brothers, Tristram Coffin Colket, III, M.D., and George Crawford Colket. She is survived by her younger brother, COL Charles “Duke” Howard Colket, USA, Ret.; three children, Richard Rewalt Rakestraw, Peter Colket Rakestraw, DVM, and Trudy (David) Munsick, RN, MSN; three grandchildren, Tris, Sam (Callie), and Ian (Caroline); three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Reared in Villanova, PA, she attended the Westover School in Middlebury, CT, where she captained the field hockey team, and played on the basketball, ice hockey, and baseball teams. After graduating in 1946, she briefly attended a secretarial school in New York. As a Westover alumna, she served as a class agent since the 1960s. She spent happy years in Sheridan, WY where her parents owned the T-T Ranch. She enjoyed trap shooting, fly fishing, and assisting with ranch duties. An avid golfer, winning many club championships, she was a member of Waynesborough Country Club, Merion Golf Club, and Kiawah Island Club. She golfed with professionals, celebrities, and royalty. She was an active bridge player and an expert at needlepoint, often gifting her creations to newborn family members throughout the years. Her artistic talents and eye for detail were also demonstrated in architectural and interior design. She collaborated with family friend, architect Walter Durham, on her and her husband’s first home together in Haverford, PA, as well as a redesign and subsequent build in Chester Springs, PA. She was owner of the clothing boutique, The Village Clothesline, in Kimberton, PA, was an avid foxhunter, a member of the Pickering Hunt Club, proud of her family ancestry, and a lifetime member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. She loved animals, especially her Persian cats. “SuSu,” as she was affectionately called, most especially loved her family and listening to the Country-Western music of her grandsons and son-in-law. A Celebration of Life will take place on August 31st at 4pm at Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli, PA.
