Martin W. Kaverman, Sr., age 56, of Erie, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Erie, on July 7, 1966, the son of Donald M. and May Causgrove Kaverman.
Marty graduated from Cathedral Prep in 1984 and earned his undergraduate degree from Hiram College in 1988. He went on to receive his master’s degree in History from Slippery Rock University in 1996. Marty worked and taught in the Millcreek School District for 29 years, and served proudly as the principal of Westlake Middle School for the last 21 years. He was a member of Saint Patrick Church.
Marty couldn’t get enough of fly fishing and tying his own flies. He was an avid Detroit sports fan and he supported Liverpool F.C. He took great pride in coaching his children’s sports teams and being a mentor to many. Marty will truly be missed by his family and friends and will be remembered for his unique dance moves, witty catch phrases, and his famous Thanksgiving Day gravy.
Marty is preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mary Ann Fessler.
In addition to his parents, Marty is survived by his wife of 29 years, Annie Fessler Kaverman; his four children, Ryan Kaverman, of Pittsburgh, Megan Kaverman, of Jupiter, Fla., Joseph Kaverman, and Marty Kaverman Jr., both of Erie; his sisters, Amy (Peter) Spagnuolo of Brooklyn, NY, and Allison Kaverman (Dave Palotas), of Erie; his father-in-law, Donald Fessler, Sr.; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom (Jill) Fessler, Kathy (Matt) Hersch, John (Amy) Fessler, Don (Erin) Fessler, Susie (Jerry) Dill, Betsy (Steve) Squeglia, Patty (James) Kloecker, and Jim (Alison) Fessler all of Erie and Bill (Mary Beth) Fessler of New Canaan, CT; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Rd. Erie, PA 16504 on Thursday from 2 – 7 p.m. and are invited the following morning to Saint Patrick Church, 130 East 4th St. for a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be private at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
