Learn to fish

If you have ever wanted to learn how to fish, now’s your chance.

Kingfisher Interpretive Centre near Enderby will be holding its Learn to Fish event July 17.

The Kalamalka Fly Fishers will be on hand to add their expertise to the day of fishing.

“We’ve got a little pond set up where kids up to 15 years of age can actually go out and fish in the pond,” said Perry Wainwright with the Kalamalka Fly Fishers.

“Our volunteers will be there to help.”

Numerous other events are planned including ‘bug soup.’

“They catch bugs from a pond and they have them in little containers so they can identify the bugs,” said Wainwright. “They catch the bugs, they put them into a pail and then sort them out into ice cube tray to identify. When the bugs are all together in one pail that’s where they get the name bug soup.”

People can learn how to fly cast on the shores of the Shuswap River, with safety measures in place, of course.

“New this year will be rock painting,” Wainwright said. “And as usual we will be doing fly tying.”

A kiddie pond will be set up where children four and under can cast a magnet and catch a ‘fish.’

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the interpretive centre, 2550 Enderby Mabel Lake Rd.
