A VILLAGE near Salisbury will have a fly-past from a Lancaster Bomber as part of its jubilee celebrations this weekend.
West Dean Jubilee Village Fete takes place on Saturday, June 4, from 1pm to 5pm, and will feature the special fly-past from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as part of its route. The exact time of the fly-past is not being released.
Chairman Derek Howland says it is “quite exciting” to have the Lancaster fly-past as part of the event, which offers “families a good time” with lots for children to do.
“It’s the biggest village fete in the area. Over the last 10 years we’ve built up a good reputation to appeal to the large numbers of people coming and every year we try and make sure we have got something different. We have got Romsey and Salisbury rock choirs, which we haven’t had before, and we have got the Lancaster coming and Frontline Ukulele Band playing. Lots of entertainment,” added Derek.
The day starts with a grand opening by Romsey Old Cadets band, marching through the village accompanied by children taking part in the Royal fancy dress competition.
Other attractions include a falconry display, dog show and agility course and the King John’s Morris Men.
In the children’s zone, visitors can spend time in the art and craft tent, have-a-go at archery, try fly fishing or learn how to play golf with Katie Huffam. Alternatively, learn a new skill at the circus tent or watch ‘Juggling Jake’ perform his circus skills.
For a quiet break pop along to the tea and cake zone where there will be music from Sandleheath Brass Band as well as refreshments to enjoy.
Derek said: “West Dean aims to give our community and visitors from surrounding communities a true ‘traditional’ village fete experience with family entertainment and fun, great stalls, and wonderful food.
“The fete last year was highly successful with 1,500 visitors and a profit of £8,000 going to support charities and village groups and with the new attractions this year we are aiming to beat this.”
Fete entry is free for children under 16 and only £3 per adult.
In the evening, there will be an open air event with live music by Uncle Toms Cobbleys and Fields in the Sky, with a bar and food from 7pm. Entry £5 for adults.
West Dean Village Fete takes place at the recreation ground on Rectory Hill and in the evening is at West Dean Club, Hillside Close.
