James Wilson Black

James (Jim) Black passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side in Aptos, California. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Jim loved fly fishing, walking his Giant Schnauzers, cheering his Golden Bears, but mostly he loved spending time with his family. Born and raised in the South, he embraced his love for playing basketball at Ohio State (Coach Fred Taylor), UCLA (Coach John Wooden), and finally, CAL Berkeley (Coach Pete Newell). He was the first in his family to graduate from college, joining ROTC, and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from UC Berkeley in 1962. Shortly after graduation, he and his first wife, Janet, left for Germany where Jim was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Their four children were raised in Cupertino, California and have made their own homes nearby. Upon Jan’s untimely death, Jim was fortunate to find love a second time and married his loving wife and travel partner of 44 years, Barbara Scarbough Black. Aptos residents couldn’t miss Jim and Barbara walking their “daughters,” beautiful, black Giant Schnauzers on the beach and neighborhood. Jim’s career in Silicon Valley included Carl N. Swenson Company, Hare, Brewer & Kelley, Prometheus, Sobrato, and finally Cupertino Land and Development. Jim and his family are especially proud of his lasting legacy in creating the Cupertino Veterans Memorial. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Mary Partland Black, his brothers Roger and Robert (Bobby) Black, his parents Zachary and Elizabeth Black (Hanson). Jim leaves behind his loving wife, Barbara Scarborough Black, his sister, Elizabeth Hall (Black), his 4 children and 14 grandchildren. His devoted family includes Dana Welle (Tom), Deborah Armstrong (Ralph), Mary Lonhart (Steve), and Michael James (Dana). He was a beacon for his 14 grandchildren who are finding their way in the world graced by his guidance and wisdom. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Cupertino Veterans Memorial. A Celebration of Life is planned for later this year.
