Meyersdale registration
The Meyersdale Area Elementary School has opened registration for children who will be eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year.
Call the elementary school office at 814-634-8313, extension 3, for those who have a child who will be 5 before Sept. 1, and wish to send him/her to kindergarten this fall.
If the child is not enrolled in kindergarten this year, but will be 6 before Sept. 1, call to register him/her for kindergarten or first grade. In Pennsylvania, a child who has attained the age of 6 on or before Sept. 1 must enroll and attend school.
Information regarding the Kindergarten Readiness Orientation and kindergarten screening process will be provided, at a later date, to those families that have registered with the elementary office.
Remarkable Raiders
Several Meyersdale Area Middle and High School students were named Remarkable Raiders for December. Students in grades six through 12 were selected based on the merits of academic performance, character, behavior, effort, good citizenship and attendance. Remarkable Raiders are recognized at the monthly meetings of the Meyersdale school board.
Middle school students who have been named December Remarkable Raiders are Macey Logsdon, Nola Knopsnyder and Olivia Baker.
Olivia Baker, an eighth grade student, is the granddaughter of Carol and Lenny Steinly. She is a member of Garden Club, choir and marching and jazz band. She is a member of the Red Raiders basketball, softball and track teams. Following high school, Baker plans to attend college to earn an education in nursing, criminal justice, government/law or science.
Nola Knopsnyder, a seventh grade student, is the daughter of Taryn Miller and Derek Knopsnyder. She is a member of the Ski Club. Outside of school, Knopsnyder enjoys dancing.
Macey Logsdon, a sixth grade student, is the daughter of Brandi and Clay Logsdon. She is a member of the Red Raiders Marching Band Honor Guard and also plays the saxophone. Outside of school, Logsdon enjoys spending time with friends. Following high school, she plans to attend college to obtain a teaching degree.
High school students named Remarkable Raiders are Joseph Comfort, Brady McKenzie, Faith Bittner and Cathleen Deal.
Joseph Comfort, a freshman, is the son of Lisa and Joseph Comfort. He is a member of the Red Raiders wrestling and varsity basketball teams. Following high school, he plans to attend college to pursue a degree and a career in the field of engineering.
Brady McKenzie, a sophomore, is the son of Brooke McKenzie and Dan McKenzie. He is a member of the Red Raiders varsity football team and participates in the weightlifting program. Following high school, McKenzie plans to attend college to obtain a degree in chemical engineering.
Faith Bittner, a junior, is the daughter of Donna and Scott Bittner. She is a staff member of the school’s newspaper, The Raider Review. In her free time, she enjoys singing and playing guitar. Following high school, Bitter plans to attend Penn State for pre-veterinary medicine.
Cathleen Deal, a senior, is the daughter of LeeAnn and the late Lawrence Deal. She is a member of the Red Raiders rifle team. A member of the Meyersdale FFA Chapter, Deal received her Keystone Degree. Her hobbies include spending time with family and taking care of the animals on her family’s farm. After graduation, her plan is to become a CNA. She also hopes one day to become a foster parent.
Forensics winners
Miller at Jaycees
Tia Miller was selected to represent Somerset Area High School at the Somerset Jaycees for December.
Miller is the daughter of Jennifer King, Somerset. She is a 12th grade AP and honors student who participates in Forensics, competitive speech team, orchestra and English Club. She is the treasurer for the orchestra. She is a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society and has been listed in the highest honors honor roll.
Outside of school Miller is an Outdoor Odyssey mentor and volunteer and works full time as a waitress at Eat N’ Park.
After high school she plans to have a career in criminal psychology and work with the FBI.
Her hobbies include cello, gardening, knitting, film photography and fly fishing.
Schrock at Rotary
Samuel L. Schrock was selected as the Rotary Club of Somerset student of the month for January. Schrock is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Kirk Schrock.
He is a 12th grade honors and AP student at Somerset Area High School. He participates in Youth and Government, Spanish Honor Society, Planish Club and class officer. He is treasurer and secretary of Youth & Government, and class vice president since his sophomore year.
Schrock received the Leroy J. Manges Memorial Economics Award in the junior year. Outside of school he worked this summer for Tableland and Cascio’s Summer Lunch Program.
He plans to attend a four year college to pursue a degree in the medical field.
He enjoys weight training, spending time with his family and friends and working as a volunteer at the Somerset County Republican fair booth.
Rockwood December students
Marteeny at Jaycees
Spencer Vaughn Marteeny, Somerset, was selected as the Somerset Jaycees student of the month for January. He is the son of Jeffrey and Paula Marteeny, and is a senior at Somerset Area High School.
At Somerset he is an honors, AP and dual enrollment with Penn Highlands Community College , Allegany Community College and Mount Aloysius College student. He plays varsity football and varsity baseball. He’s a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Fly Fishing Club. Marteeny is a highest honors honor roll student, four-year varsity letter winner for football and baseball, where he is captain of both teams, and is a member of Mu Alpha Theta.
He attends Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. He is the owner/operator of Marteeny Sealcoating LLC.
After graduation, Marteeny plans to attend college for a nursing degree. He enjoys golfing, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, skiing and traveling with his family.
