1944 – 2022
Dennis A Coates passed away January 4, 2022 from complications due to injuries sustained in a car accident.
Dennis was born March 11, 1944 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah to Alvin and Melba Coates. He was the youngest of 3 boys growing up on a farm outside of Mt. Pleasant. He graduated from North Sanpete High School where he was student body president and excelled in athletics and academics. He attended Snow College and Weber State University on basketball scholarships where he earned his degree in Chemistry. Dennis married the love of his life, Shanna Cloward, on June 22, 1963 in the Manti LDS temple. They shared 58 wonderful years together raising 4 children and making impressionable memories.
Dennis began his professional career teaching Math and Chemistry at Kearns High School. He worked for IBM in Las Vegas, Nevada before returning to Salt Lake to start a construction company with his brother LeLand. He served a term as President of the Utah Home Builders Association and the RPAC. He finished his professional career teaching Computer Science at Salt Lake Community College.
Dennis was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fly fishing, hiking, farming, looking for Native American artifacts and beekeeping. His favorite places to be were at the Ranch, on the reservoir, casting a Chalupa, or on the mountain looking for a buck or bull and loved spending time with his family. He had many hobbies and never lost the desire to learn and try new things.
He was preceded in death by his son Chad LeLand and his brother Bryce Gordon. He is survived by his wife Shanna Lucille; children Carl Dennis (MaryLou), Janette Shanna Austin, Ryan Albert (Jodie), and Kimberly (Chad); brother LeLand; grandchildren Matthew (Danielle), Logan, Taylor (Jasley), Kristin, Clay, Hannah (Heston), Audrey, Carson, and Beckett; and great granddaughter Jovie.
The family wishes to thank all those who have demonstrated their love and compassionate service during this time.
A Viewing/Celebration of Life will be held Friday January 7, 2022 at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley Mortuary, 1007 W South Jordan Parkway (10400 South) from 6 to 8pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dennis Coates Youth for Outdoors Memorial Fund would be appreciated.
