While we all wait patiently for summer to finally get its act together, the cool, wet weather we’re experiencing should guarantee amazing freshwater fishing for months. With impoundments like Wyangala Dam full and overflowing, and the mountain lakes in the best shape they’ve been in years, fishing for natives and trout around the region promises to be red-hot all summer. Lake Eucumbene is the fullest it’s been since 2018 and, as you’d expect, the edge fishing is excellent. Look for flooded bays where the water has drowned grassy banks – that’s where the highest concentrations of food will be flushed out. Because these areas are mostly shallow, fish in the low light periods – dawn, dusk and under heavy cloud – for best results. Bait, lure and fly will all score fish under these conditions. Trolling has been popular. The fish aren’t deep so you can score good catches with diving minnows and Tassie Devils. Dry fly fishing on the Monaro and alpine streams should be outstanding in the lead-up to Christmas – hard to believe, given many were surrounded by a thick blanket of snow this week. Once conditions settle, I’d expect a full-to-the-brim Wyangala to fish very well from the bank for golden perch and Murray cod. On the coast, there are large schools of salmon along the beaches between Narooma and Tathra. Beach fishers chasing salmon have also landed a couple of solid mulloway, so anything’s possible. It’s heartening to see whiting finally hitting surface lures in reasonable numbers. Focus on the flats in the lower reaches of systems like Tuross, Moruya River, Durras Lake, Conjola and the like. Flathead aren’t exactly biting their heads off yet in the estuaries, probably because of the yo-yoing temperatures.
