Edgar Alan “Bud” Rainin, M.D.

Edgar Alan “Bud” Rainin, M.D., 81, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side, on Oct. 27, 2021. Bud was born on Feb. 22, 1940 (although he always celebrated on the 23rd), on a communal farm outside of Cleveland, Ohio where his father was a photographer/farmer and his mother was a homemaker. Bud graduated from Shaker Heights High School, attended Ohio State for only 3 years before being accepted early to the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine where he graduated in 1965.
After medical school, Bud made his way out of Ohio and headed to the golden state of California to intern at San Francisco General Hospital. It was here that he met the love of his life, a nurse who also worked at SF General, Judith Ward of Antioch, CA. In 1966 he enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War as a ships doctor on the USS Mills, a Destroyer escort. When they spent a few weeks near New Zealand he wrote home and requested that Judy “come marry him or forget it.” They were married in Dunedin, New Zealand on Oct. 22, 1966. Dr. Rainin won the Vomitus Medal aboard the SS Mills and was gratefully transferred to Key Port, WA where he was the naval doctor for the submarine base and the northwest doctor for the Bends.
Dr. Rainin completed his fellowship and residency in Ophthalmology at Stanford University from 1968 to 1971. Thereafter he devoted his career to innovative medical and surgical techniques in the field of Ophthalmology. He held over 12 patents related to the manufacturing of interocular lenses, contact lenses and surgical devices. All of which are being used today by Ophthalmologists around the world. Dr. Rainin founded I Quest, Inc. in the early 1970’s, IOPTEX Research with his brother in 1981 and Caregaurd in 1997. He also held an Associate Professorship at UC Davis.
At the core of his extraordinary career was a thriving private practice and surgery center. Throughout the 23 years of private practice, Bud was widely known for prioritizing the compassionate care of his patients. Quite literally restoring the miracle of eyesight to thousands of people over the years.
He spent some of his favorite family time in Tahoe and later Montana skiing, boogie boarding in Maui, fly fishing, hiking, rock climbing, learning to fly and then flying all over the western United States and even to Mexico. He traveled with his family extensively for fun and for work. Performed surgery on the Crown Prince Faisal bin Saad of Saudi Arabi and participated in Radial Keratotomy conferences in Moscow, Russia.
Edgar was pre-deceased by his brother, Ken and his sister, Janet. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, his two children and their spouses, four amazing grandchildren and countless family and friends who loved him dearly.
Perhaps above all else, Bud was known for his hilarious observational sense of humor!
A celebration of life will be planned for the Spring of 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Edgar “Bud” A.
