Jeffrey M. Wilkins went home to be with the Lord suddenly at the age of 53 on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.
Jeff was an avid outdoorsman and an excellent fly fisherman. He had a passion for being on the water and the water is where he made his office. He made a career of over 3 decades guiding clients to thousands and thousands of trout in the Appalachian Mountains and the western United States. Jeff began his fly-fishing career working, managing, and guiding in three different retail stores, including the Fly Line in Greensboro, NC.
Jeff loved guiding, but what he admitted he enjoyed even more was teaching people the art of casting a fly rod and the tedious task of fly tying. He was a Fly Fishers Certified Fly Casting instructor and has taught the fly fishing and fly-tying curriculums at both the University of North Carolina Greensboro and Guilford Technical Community College for the past twelve years. In three decades, Jeff has taught hundreds of people to cast a fly rod, some beginners just learning, and others seeking to perfect their cast. He has done a great deal for the sport of fly fishing and is a legend and mentor in the eyes of many.
Jeff was an extremely loving husband and loved his wife Kathy more than anything except his Lord and Savior. He loved spending time with her and their two sons, Ben and Josh. Enjoying the outdoors with them is something Jeff loved and cherished most of all.
Jeff will be greatly remembered for his loving heart, selflessness, ability to teach, his friendship, and great love for Jesus. Next time you’re standing in a cool mountain stream in the Appalachian Mountains, think of Jeff and catch a big brown trout for him. He will be smiling down on you from heaven.
The family visitation for Jeff will be held Sunday, October 31, 2021, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Forbis and Dick Funeral Service, 5926 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410. The funeral service will be held Monday, November 1, 11 a.m. at Christ Covenant Church, 811 Jefferson Rd., Greensboro, NC 27410.
Jeff is preceded in death by his father, Gary Wilkins and mother, Dorothy Wilkins Widener, as well as his son, Josh Chesney.
Jeff is survived by his wife, Kathy Wilkins and their son, Ben Chesney, his stepfather, Ervine Widener, Kathy’s parents, Howard and Dale Wallace, his aunt Phyllis and uncle Laney Cook and many more aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
