Mobility impaired deer hunt
The Wayne County Izaak Walton League is sponsoring a mobility impaired (wheelchair) deer hunt, which allows permanently or temporarily disabled hunters an opportunity to hunt during deer gun season. Hunting experience is not required, but a valid hunting license and deer permit are required of each hunter. The hunt location is 6928 Cedar Valley Road, West Salem.
The hunt is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 29, and will run as many days as needed to give each hunter two days in the deer blind. There are wheelchair accessible carts to transport hunters and four covered blinds to hunt from.
The application deadline is Nov. 13. There will be a hunter orientation at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21. The orientation will allow hunters to view the blinds and become familiar with the club grounds before their time to hunt. Call Roger Schrader at 330-263-6432 for an application.
Ohio State Trapper’s Association
The Ohio State Trapper’s Association will hold its Region B meet Saturday at the Killbuck Valley Sportsman’s Club,8 482 Township Road 559, Holmesville. Trapping demonstrations begin at 8 a.m. with Steve Bourgeois discussing pocket sets, followed at 9 a.m. with Glenn Witchey giving tips on racoon trapping. At 10 a.m. Mark Kohler will do a seminar on coyote trapping, with Brian Sprague talking all about the OSTA fur auctions at 11 a.m.
At noon, there will be a lunch, raffle and 50/50 drawing. There will be free tailgate and vendor setup. For more information, call Keith Jones at 740-472-5459. Food and refreshments will be offered by the Killbuck Valley Sportsman’s Club.
Trout Unlimited meeting
The Clear Fork River Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at First Presbyterian CHurch, 621 College Ave., Wooster. People attending in person are asked to wear a mask. A Zoom option is available as well. For access, email cfrtu.rsvp@gmail.com and confirm the meeting date and include name and email address. An invitation to the Zoom meeting will be sent. Those who attended meetings by Zoom last spring, but did not attend last month, also must send the email request to continue using Zoom this fall.
There will be a discussion of chapter activities, including planning for the fall trout stocking of Apple Creek and the three-session Learn to Fly Fish clinic on Oct 6, 13 and 16. Details of the event are available at cfrtu.org.
Katie Johnstone and Jessica Suvak-Tran will speak about a women’s fly fishing group they recently founded called Ohio Women on the Fly. They will share how their passion for fly fishing led them to create a group that brings female anglers in Ohio together and encourages more women to step into the water. They will provide insight on how the group came to be, how quickly it grew into something bigger than they could have imagined and how they will continue to grow through education, events and much more.
Meetings of the Clear Fork River Chapter of Trout Unlimited are open to the public and anyone interested in fishing and cold water fisheries preservation is encouraged to participate. Interested women anglers are especially invited to attend.
Learn to fly fish
Individuals interested in learning the art of fly-fishing are invited to attend a free, three-part course in October. The family-friendly events are designed for beginning anglers and scheduled for locations in northeast Ohio. The Clear Fork River Chapter of Trout Unlimited is partnering with the Division of Wildlife to teach the basics of fly fishing, fly-tying,and to provide participants opportunities to test their fishing skills.
Session 1: Intro to Fly-Fishing, Part 1, 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, Wildlife District Three Headquarters, 912 Portage Lakes Drive, Akron.
Students will learn how to assemble fly-fishing tackle, how to tie essential knots and how to recognize various fly patterns used to catch fish. The session includes casting and an opportunity to fish.
Session 2: Intro to Fly-Fishing, Part 2, 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, Wildlife District Three Headquarters, 912 Portage Lakes Drive, Akron.
Casting and an opportunity to fish are the focus of the first part of this session. Students will then learn how to tie flies and finish with a Q&A session at the end.
Session 3: Meet the Stream and Fly-Fishing, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, Apple Creek, Grosjean Park, Freedlander Road, Wooster.
Students can participate in releasing hatchery raised rainbow trout into Apple Creek. A stream walk will teach students how to recognize holding areas for trout, as well as how to approach and fish in the stream. A brief macroinvertebrate study will be conducted along with a stream litter cleanup. Students can fly-fish for trout with help from experienced Trout Unlimited members.
Additional details are provided to participants upon pre-registration. Nearly all fishing equipment and tying supplies are provided (a limited number of waders are available). Be prepared to participate outside, even in inclement weather. Participants are asked to take sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, water, insect repellant, and other items to make the experience individually more comfortable.
Applicants are required to be at least 12 years old, and youths need to be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required by visiting the Wild Ohio Harvest Community page at wildohio.gov.
Space is limited to the first 25 individuals registered, and participants are required to attend all three sessions. No guests or walk-ins.
Fall still shoots
