Autumn officially begins on Wednesday, and for many, it marks their favorite time of year — full of the splendor of trees changing, cooler nights and comfortable outdoor activities.

To make sure you get the most out of the Michigan fall, Headlines recently asked readers about their favorite autumn activities — and your colleagues did not disappoint!

Here is a rundown of more than two dozen fall activities that can keep you going until the snow starts to fall this upcoming winter.

Thank you to all who sent in your suggestions!

Grace Foxworthy, medical assistant, Dexter Health Center

My husband, teenage daughter and I have an acre of land in the country in Lenawee County. We have a lovely backyard with several pet chickens. On cool fall evenings, we love sitting in front of our fire ring, toasting marshmallows and making s’mores … who said s’mores were just for summer??

This is especially wonderful after a day of picking apples and wandering through Hidden Lake Gardens. We wrap up the evening by making fresh, hot apple crisp. DELIGHTFUL!

Patsy Chambers, patient services associate, Kellogg Eye Center (Canton)

I love the fall leaves, cider and donuts, caramel apples, corn maze, bonfires, hot chocolate, watching college football, wearing my fall sweaters and cozying up to a nice fire with my husband. Fall is my favorite time of the year and it always just goes too fast!

Madhumitha Balaji, applications systems analyst, anesthesiology

We do a lot of regular things every fall, including: a corn/sunflower maze, a speed boat ride on Grand Island, trail walking in local parks to see fall colors and lighthouse visits. We also make a mandatory trip Up North to Munising in the Upper Peninsula.

Sarah Dix, patient services assistant, adult BMT

My favorite fall activity is to take a walk through the woods and look at all the colorful leaves. If it is a bit chilly, I can finish it off with a cup of hot tea/chocolate to drink while I read under a blanket.

Shelagh Saenz, senior project manager, Michigan Medicine Wellness Office

School buses on a race track.
The School Bus Races at Spartan Speedway

There are so many fun fall things to do — the Dexter Cider Mill, apple picking, enjoying a backyard fire pit, etc.

But here is one people may not know about — we call it the School Bus Races at Spartan Speedway, a local race track in Mason, Michigan. At the beginning of every school year, they do school bus Figure 8s on the track. It’s a bit of travel but so much fun for the entire family!

Bev Steinbach, patient care technician, C&W radiology

There is nothing better than sitting around a bonfire with family and friends, making s’mores and roasting hot dogs. In the fall, our family also loves going on hayrides.

Pat Bergeron, research administrator, Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center

I love sitting outside on a sunny fall day, knitting with cozy yarn!

Mary LaFountain, patient services intermediate, Taubman medical specialties

We love picking all the fall crops and putting the garden to bed. This time of year is also great for sleeping with a blanket.

Tracey Partridge, senior business systems analyst, HITS

In the fall, my favorite activities include:

  • Monitoring and sharing with associated groups bird and butterfly migration sightings
  • Camping, bonfires and fly fishing (fall is huge salmon, then steelhead season, and offers fantastic brown trout fishing, as well!)
  • Attending my grandchildren’s school sports
  • Catching fall Lake Michigan sunsets

Dawn Cicero, patient services associate, Rogel Cancer Center

Each autumn, we take a walk in the Nichols Arboretum and then rake and jump in the leaves with the kids!

CareyLynn Flaugher, administrative manager, C&W

There are four things that make our list every fall:

  • Visiting the Dexter Cider Mill for donuts and cider.
  • Camping in Lac La Belle, Michigan and exploring the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. Any camping trip wouldn’t be complete without a campfire and marshmallows.
  • Attending the Apple Festival in Charlevoix on Oct. 8.
  • Visiting the Waterloo recreation area to view the color change while hiking the Waterloo-Pinckney trail.

Julie Hawkins, administrative assistant, post-acute care service, Wheelchair Seating Service

Fall is great for strolling through Tecumseh’s Appleumpkin Festival and Kapnick Orchards’ Apple Festival, which run at the same time.

It also gives you a great opportunity to relax and take deep breaths of the cooler fall air. It’s “good breathing weather.”

Linda Weinlander, R.N.

My husband and I love to visit the woods in upper Michigan when the colors are at their peak. We also like to take the grandkids to the pumpkin patch and orchard for cider and a fresh donut. Happy Fall to you and yours!
