Late summer into early fall is a great time to fish beetle patterns for trout, bass, and panfish. The big hatches of summer are usually over, and the fish know that terrestrials provide a lot of nutrition. In this great video from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions, he ties a high-floating, hi-vis version of a standard foam beetle. As usual, he offers plenty of cool tricks that help the pattern float higher, and the white poly post means you can see the fly even in low light.
Turbo Beetle
Hook: Standard wet-fly hook (here, a Lightning Strike NW1), sizes 10
and 12.
Thread: Black, 6/0 or 140-denier.
Shell/Head: Black 2mm craft foam.
Adhesive #1: Superglue, here Fly Tyers Z-Ment.
Legs: Black round-rubber legs, small.
Belly: Olive Ice Dub.
Post: White polypropylene floating yarn.
Collar: Olive Ice Dub.
Adhesive #2: Head cement, here Sally Hansen Hard-as-Nails.
