Edgar “Gene” Polk
March 29, 1936 – July 20, 2021
Columbia, South Carolina – Edgar “Gene” Polk, 85, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021. He was born March 29, 1936, in Varnville, SC, to the late Susie McLane Polk and Edgar Elsworth Polk.
Edgar (“Gene/Daddy/Papa”) is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sissy Polk of Columbia; two daughters, Jeana Claire Rago Blair (Tim) of Tampa, FL, and Kristy Polk of Leesville, SC; and a son, Riley Polk (Cathy) of Fountain Inn, SC. He was the proud PaPa to seven grandchildren: Elsa Blair, Madelyn Polk, Hinton Rago, Carson Martin (Taylor), Avram Rago, Isaac Rago and Shuler Polk (Jane).
Gene was the middle of five children and is survived by Betty Sue Marr (Raymond), Dickie McClure and William Polk (Ginny). He was predeceased by his brother, Doug Polk.
Edgar was a family man. He was always there for his children and grandchildren and relished all of their accomplishments. Following retirement, Gene took up tennis and became quite the competitor. He could be seen on the tennis court several times a week. He relished his friends on the tennis courts and missed them dearly as his health declined.
Gene had many friends over the years. He and Sissy had an amazing and fun marriage … camping with the kids, square dancing with friends, spending time on the lake fly fishing, crabbing at the beach, and many supper clubs. He cherished all of his friendships.
His children will miss the dad who helped them repair anything that ever needed fixing. He had them all learning to change a tire as well as the oil of a car before they could drive.
Above all, Gene was a faithful servant of the Lord!
Gene was an active member of Northeast Presbyterian Church.
A graveside service will be held Friday, July 23, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. in Northeast Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Columbia. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall at Northeast Presbyterian Church.
