In the world of adventure travel, multi-sport trips are now often referred to as multi-adventure trips. This may be because “adventure” sounds so much more adventurous than “sport” does. Regardless of the nomenclature debates in the marketing department, they mean pretty much the same thing.
It’s a trip with multiple activities, ideal for those who want to stretch different muscles, for travelers who get easily bored, and for those who want to try something new. The activity menu is typically some combination of hiking, biking, e-biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and rafting, with a location that is usually pretty spectacular. Here are five new multi-adventure trips for 2023 in Greece, Southeast Asia, Argentine, Chile and Uruguay.
Greece: Tinos, Naxos & Santorini Multi-Adventure Tour
MT Sobek is in the forefront of multi-adventure tours and their Greece:Tinos, Naxos & Santorini Multi-Adventure Tour is an active way of experiencing the Greek Isles. There’s hiking on Tinos, Naxos & Santorini, three of Greece’s most spectacular islands. Hike village to village on the island of Tinos, and to the top of Mt. Zeus on Naxos. On Santorini, you hike in the caldera and kayak along volcanic cliffs. On the mainland, you get a cultural fix with a tour of the Acropolis in Athens. Rated level 3 (out of 5), hiking about 6.5 miles daily and kayaking in protected waters. The eight-day trip is $4,995 (per person, based on double occupancy, as are all trips mentioned here).
Thailand & Cambodia Multisport Adventure
BikeHike Adventures, a Vancouver-based outfitter, has some interesting multi-adventure itineraries, such as their Thailand & Cambodia Multisport Adventure. It’s a trip to two of Southeast Asia’s most exotic locations, Thailand and Cambodia, which starts in Bangkok before heading into the countryside and then crossing into Cambodia. Biking, hiking, and kayaking are on the agenda, as are meeting hillside tribes in remote villages. Highlights include paddling along the Mae Kok River and biking on the border road between Thailand and Myanmar. This is a “moderate” trip, level 2 out of 4, and the 12-day adventure is $3,799.
Argentina’s Mendoza Multi-Adventure Tour
Backroads probably has more multi-adventure tours than anyone else. Their new trip in Argentina’s wine region of Mendoza offers some classic check-the-boxes experiences, like tasting local Malbecs, biking through vineyards with the Andes as a backdrop, enjoying an asado barbecue and seeing the lifestyle of Argentina’s gauchos. What elevates Argentina’s Mendoza Multi-Adventure Tour to a real adventure are the day-to-day activities, which include walking, hiking, biking, and rafting. Rated levels 2 to 4 (out of 5), this seven-day trip is $5,999.
Discover Aysen
Discover Aysen from Adventure Life is a passport to discover the remote Aysen region of Chile. This trip includes kayaking the Marble Caves, trekking on the Exploradores Glacier, hiking through San Rafael National Park, and rafting the Baker River. There are optional horseback riding and fly fishing available. Accommodations are at the Mallin Colorado Ecolodge, and the six-day trip is $2,990.
Uruguay Active
Uruguay Active says it all, an active trip to the east coast of South America, to a country that relatively few Americans have visited. Because this is a Butterfield & Robinson trip, you won’t be roughing it. It begins in the capital of Montevideo, with easy biking through the countryside, with time to walk white-sand beaches and sample Uruguay’s little-known wines. It’s the opportunity to travel through the wine region known as the “Uruguayan Tuscany,” going to the resort of Punta del Este, and ending in the hamlet of Jose Ignacio on the Atlantic coast. Rated level 2 (out of 5), this seven-day trip is $9,995.
