You may think that private islands are only accessible to billionaires and movie stars. But you can buy some beautiful private islands for $300,000 or less. Sure, you may have to ship in supplies like toilet paper, water and bug spray at your own expense — and at an even bigger expense, build your own house, well and more. You also have to think about issues like infrastructure, closest hospital, cell phone reception, flooding, docks for boats and more. Whew! But for some people, there’s no luxury like private island luxury. Here are five private islands you can buy for $250,000 or less.

Ken’s Island in Ontario: $109,648

Private Islands, Inc.

Located a little over four hours north of Toronto, in the middle of the sparsely populated Sudbury District, Ken’s Island — listed at $109,648 — is a picturesque island located in the middle of the Wanapitei River. Inaccessible via car, the listing nonetheless points out that a zip line could easily be built from the mainline to the island to allow quick access for visitors. The island is zoned for residential living and looks like an ideal forest retreat. Although the island offers the possibility of true isolation, it’s also 35 minutes away from Greater Sudbury, a city with a population of 166,000 that was once the world’s leader in nickel mining. But if you do buy the island, get ready to be snowed in frequently in winter.

An island in the Chiriqui Lagoon in Panama: $150,000

Private Islands, Inc.

If you never want to be cold again, consider buying this 9.3-acre private island, priced at $150,000, off the northeast coast of Isla Popa in Panama. The island is located in the Chiriquí Lagoon, which has an average water temperature of 83 degrees Fahrenheit, even in the winter, and features a number of coral reefs, mangroves and tropical forests.  The island is currently untouched by human hands and features a small beach where boats can dock. If you do buy the island, and decide to build on it, get ready to spend some time getting supplies, either from Chiriqui Grande, a town 30 minutes away by boat, or from Bocas, where the airport is located, which is 40 minutes away by boat.

The Carolina Cays, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina: Starting at $299,000

Private Islands, Inc.

The Carolina Cays, which are a collection of 24 islands stretching for three miles along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, have been privately owned since the 1970s. They are now up for sale individually, and the islands, which average 10 acres in size, and have elevations of up to 12 feet above sea level, have listing prices ranging from $299,000 to $599,900.  Although you’ll have to build your own house, each island already comes equipped with freshwater wells, septic systems and docks. They are minutes away – by boat – from the boat launch on the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge, which connects the mainland of North Carolina to Highway 12, a roadway that links the many peninsulas and islands of the northern Outer Banks. Enjoy unlimited seafood from the waters off your backyard while you watch hundreds of species of birds mate and migrate through the region.

MacLellans Island in Nova Soctia: $215,000

Private Islands, Inc.

Just a 20-minute drive from the Halifax International Airport, MacLellans Island consists of 15 acres of untouched land located at least 35 feet above sea level. The island, which is visible from the shoreline, is located in Chezzetcook Inlet, a shallow bay on the eastern Shore of Nova Scotia. The $215,000 listing suggests building your dream house on the island facing the nearby baseball park so that you can watch games being played during the summer. If you’d prefer more privacy, there are plenty of buildable locations on the island that feature picturesque views of the bay. Don’t be worried about feeling lonely – the island also features a thriving deer population that reputedly swam across the bay and are now permanent residents.

1 Big Virgin Island in Ontario

Private Island’s Inc.

Formerly a fly-fishing resort, this 10-acre, $245,932 island boasts 3,300 feet of waterfront access on Lake Nipigon, the largest lake in Ontario. The island, which is shaped like a tooth with a speech bubble coming from the top of it, has myriad hidden coves and thin stretches of land that divide different parts of the land, allowing for plenty of diversity of views. Located in an area that is sparsely populated, the closest town to the island is Beardmore, a town of roughly 4,000 people that claims to be the snow capitol of the world. If you have a snowmobile, great. If you have a helicopter, even better, because otherwise, you’ll have to drive over 13 hours to reach Toronto.
