Now, your weekend weather:

  • Saturday: An afternoon thunderstorm. High: 88 Low: 71.
  • Sunday: A p.m. t-storm in spots. High: 87 Low: 70.

Here are the top five stories today in Roswell:

  1. The deadline to place an offer on the historic Hembree House in Roswell was Friday August 5. The 1,400 square foot house was listed for $125,000. One of the conditions noted by the seller is that the future owner will preserve the structure and limit remodeling. Those interested in placing an offer on the property, had until 3 p.m. on August 5 to do so. ( Paywall: The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  2. ARC Fly Rods is a new business that has recently opened in Roswell. This unique shop sells bamboo fishing rods and allows customers the opportunity to be involved with creating their own bamboo fly fishing rods. Jeff Purdy, one of the owners, has been making bamboo rods for over 30 years. After their five-day workshop, participants will have fashioned a custom two-piece rod and a red sock and tube for storage. (foxatlanta.com)
  3. The Roswell City Council will apply for a grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts. This grant is purposed for restoring and maintaining art facilities and equipment. This $45,000 Cultural Facilities Grant will help provide more funds to improve lighting and for an AV system for the Cultural Arts Center meeting room. (twitter.com)
  4. North Atlanta Voices is a Sandy Springs based community chorus that is open for anyone who wants to sing. The group started in 2018 and became a non-profit in 2020. They encourage people with no experience singing in a chorus to come; you do not have to audition to join. There will be an informational meeting on August 8 for those interested in joining. From my notebook:

  • Atlanta Junior Rowing Association: The Fall preseason starts on Monday August 8 for the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association in Roswell. This is open for 9-12 grade students. There is no experience required to sign up. (Atlanta Junior Rowing Association via Facebook)
  • The Roswell Cultural Arts Center: Tickets are on sale for Saturday’s performance of the The Little Mermen. This cover band plays rock covers of beloved Disney classics. This concert is for all ages. (roswellcac.showare.com)
  • The city of Alpharetta: Food Truck Alley is held every fourth Thursday of the month in Alpharetta. This past event on July 28 showcased Riley Biederer, a native of Cumming and a finalist on “The Voice.” The main attraction, however, is always the variety of food trucks present. (appenmedia.com)
