Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- On Friday, the workers at the Starbucks on 7th Street and Redondo Avenue voted unanimously to unionize. “Union activists allege they have had their hours cut, been fired, and more.” Starbucks referred requests or comments to the website for the National Labor Relations Board. In the meantime, residents were supportive, saying workers “deserve as much as they can get.” (ABC)
- What were Saturday’s emergency alerts all about? Residents were unceremoniously roused to warnings that Chevy Chase canyon residents were to evacuate. Later, the City of Glendale acknowledged that “there was an error in the tech used to send out this morning’s message.” However, critics suggest that the tech worked just fine; the problem was that nothing told message recipients that the message was a drill. - On Friday, the City demolished most of the Queen Mary’s lifeboats. “Of the ship’s 22 total lifeboats, three were identified for preservation, including two that were left on the ship. Five have been set aside for future consideration, city officials said.” While there were two proposals from groups willing to take on the boats, they failed to meet the City’s “requirements to show how they would safely transport and repair the vessels.” (LB Post)
- What will the City Council be discussing on Tuesday? One item on the agenda might be the LB Board of Water Commissioner‘s request to consolidate the Water and Gas departments. Long-time residents may remember a similar move in 1988 to “put sewer services under the Water Department.” (Press-Telegram)
- Recently, we talked about the sudden influx of dogs to the local animal shelter. Do you know what else is coming in? We learned on Friday that there are pocket pets! These are the hamsters, guinea pigs, and (pet) rats. Someone, who would have loved to have a dog but couldn’t accommodate it, now has another opportunity to find and spoil a little pet! (LB Post)
